Refresh Concrete with Spray-On in Canberra

Tired of a grey, stained or dated driveway? Spray-on concrete, sometimes called spraycrete, is a thin coloured and patterned layer applied over a sound existing slab, a popular way to refresh a driveway, path or pool surround without pouring new concrete.

What spray-on concrete is and where it suits

Spray-on concrete is a thin cement based coating sprayed over concrete you already have, then coloured, patterned and sealed. It is a surface finish rather than a new pour, so it changes how a driveway, path or pool surround looks and grips without the cost and disruption of breaking out the old slab and starting again.

It suits a surface that is structurally fine but tired: a plain grey driveway that has weathered, an entertaining area you want tied in with a pattern, or a pool surround that needs a cooler, more slip aware finish underfoot. Because it leans on the slab beneath, the honest first question is always whether that slab is sound enough to carry a new top, which is where we start before talking colours.

How we apply spray-on concrete

The look people notice at the end is decided in the preparation nobody sees. A spray finish is only as good as its bond to the slab, so cleaning, repair and priming are where a job holds up or peels, not the top coat.

Each step below is set to the size of your area, the pattern you pick and the state of the surface we are covering.

  1. Pressure clean the existing surface back to sound, clean concrete and let it dry
  2. Grind or profile where needed and cut out any oil, moss or flaking so the coating can grip
  3. Repair cracks and fill low spots so the finish does not telegraph old damage
  4. Roll or spray a bonding primer across the prepared slab
  5. Lay any adhesive stencil pattern for a brick, tile or stone look
  6. Spray the base coat, then the coloured top coat in even passes to the chosen depth
  7. Lift the stencil, tidy the edges and let the coating set
  8. Seal the surface for grip, colour hold and wear

Colours, patterns and the slab underneath

The finish is where most of the choice sits. Single colour work reads clean and modern, while stencilled patterns can mimic pavers, tiles, brick or slate, and the sealer sets whether the surface ends up matte or with a slight sheen. On a pool surround or a sloped path we lean toward a grippier sealer so the surface stays safe when it is wet.

None of that matters if the concrete below is moving. Much of Canberra sits on reactive clay that swells and shrinks with the seasons, and a slab that has cracked through or lifted on that clay will push the same crack up through a new coating. Cold, frosty ACT winters also spall and flake older surfaces over time. So before we spray, we check the slab honestly for structural cracks, hollow spots and frost damage, and if it is failing underneath we say so rather than coat a problem.

What affects the pricing

The coating itself is rarely the whole story. Most of what sets the price is the area, the finish you choose and how much work the old surface needs before anything is sprayed.

The main things we quote against are:

Timeline and curing

A typical driveway or path is usually a few days from first clean to final seal, with drying time built in between preparation, the coats and the sealer. Larger areas or heavy crack repair add to that, and the surface has to be properly dry before we start, so wet weather can push a booking.

Cold Canberra winters slow everything down, because a coating and its sealer cure more slowly on a cold, damp slab. We will tell you when the surface can take foot traffic and when it is safe to drive on for your specific job, since walking or parking on it too early is a common way a fresh spray finish gets marked or lifts at the edges.

Getting a finish that lasts

A spray-on surface earns its life in two places: the bond to a sound slab, and the seal on top. Get the preparation right on concrete that is structurally stable, and the coating moves with the slab instead of letting go of it. Skip the preparation, or spray over a slab that is cracking on the clay, and no colour or pattern will hold it together.

After that it comes down to upkeep. The sealer takes the wear, the sun and the frost, so resealing every few years keeps the colour strong and the surface protected. Rinsing off oil, leaf stain and grime rather than letting it sit also helps. Looked after that way over a good base, a spray finish handles ACT summers and winters and keeps a tired driveway looking renewed for years.

Common questions

What is spray concrete?
Spray-on concrete is a thin cement-based coating sprayed over an existing sound slab and then sealed, often with a stencil pattern or fleck. It renews the look of a driveway or path without replacing the concrete underneath.
Is spraycrete any good?
Over a sound, well-prepared slab it is a durable, good-value way to renew a surface. It is only as good as the slab beneath it and the prep and seal, so we check the base slab first rather than spraying over a surface that is already failing.
Is spray concrete expensive?
It is one of the cheaper ways to renew a surface, because you keep the existing slab and only re-do the top. The price depends on the area, the condition of the old surface and the finish you choose, so we quote from the details.
What is the cheapest way to cover a concrete floor?
A spray-on or thin overlay is usually the cheapest way to cover tired concrete, since it reuses the slab. Whether it suits depends on the state of the slab and where it is, so we look at it before recommending it.
Will spray-on concrete crack on Canberra clay?
A spray-on surface follows the slab beneath it, so if that slab is sound and jointed properly it holds up through Canberra frost and clay movement. If the base slab moves or is already cracked, the coating will show it, which is why we assess the slab first.
