How we pour a commercial slab
On a commercial job the sequence is driven by the engineer's drawings and by keeping the site usable while the work goes in. Large floors are rarely poured in one hit, so the joint layout and the staging are planned before anyone turns up with a truck.
Every step below is set to the design load, the specified finish and the flatness tolerance for your floor, and to the drawings the project runs on.
- Read the drawings and confirm the design load, thickness, reinforcement and surface tolerance
- Set out the pour sequence and the joint grid so a large area is broken into workable bays
- Prepare and compact the base, then place membrane where the design calls for it
- Fix reinforcement, mesh or bar, to the detail on chairs at the correct cover
- Set and brace formwork to line and level, with thickenings and edge details as drawn
- Pour each bay in sequence, screed and level to the specified tolerance
- Finish to spec, whether that is a broom surface, a trowelled floor or a burnished finish
- Saw-cut the control joints on time and cure the slab so it gains strength without crazing
Load, tolerance and the specification
Commercial concrete is specified, not guessed. The mix strength, the slab thickness, the reinforcement and the joint spacing all come from an engineer's design tied to the load the surface carries and, for slabs on ground, to the site's soil classification. Much of Canberra sits on reactive clay that swells and shrinks with moisture, and under AS 2870 that ground is classed and the slab and footings are matched to it, which is why the same size floor is not the same job from one site to the next.
Flatness matters as much as strength on many commercial floors.
